Jan. 31, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa swimmer Becky Stoughton has been selected as the Big Ten Conference Freshman Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is Stoughton’s third Freshman of the Week honor and fourth Big Ten accolade this season.

The Peoria, Ill., native earned the honor after producing first place finishes and NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 500 free (4:47.28), 1,650 free (16:27.77), 200 back (1:58.38) and 400 IM (4:17.44) at the Shamrock Invitational on Jan. 27-28.

Stoughton’s time of 4:47.28 in the 500 free set a pool record at the University of Notre Dame’s Rolfs Aquatics Center. She also earned a collegiate best time in the 200 back, a time that ranks second in Iowa school history. Stoughton also placed second and fifth, respectively, in the 800 yard freestyle (7:31.92) and 400 yard medley relays (3:47.64).

Stoughton was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Dec. 10 and Jan. 24. She also was selected as the Division I National Swimmer of the Week by collegeswimming.com and the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 8.

Stoughton and the Hawkeyes return to action Thursday in a dual meet at Northern Iowa.
