5 Hawkeyes Earn Postseason Honors

Feb. 27, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Five University of Iowa women’s basketball players – Morgan Johnson, Jaime Printy, Kamille Wahlin, Samantha Logic and Kelly Krei – have received All-Big Ten recognition, the conference announced Monday evening.

Johnson was named second team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media, earning the first postseason conference accolades of her career. The Platte City, Mo. leads the Big Ten and ranks 14th in the NCAA with a 54.2 field goal percentage and is second in the conference with 2.1 blocks per game. She is second on the team in scoring at 15 points per game and 15.7 points during conference play. Johnson collected four double-doubles during the regular season and has seven 20-point performances.

“Morgan has had an outstanding year for us,” said UI head coach Lisa Bluder. “In my opinion, she is one of the top five players in our conference. She has established herself as the best back-to-the-basket post in the league and her numbers reflect that. Morgan deserves a lot of credit for putting up those kinds of numbers while battling through constant pain and injuries.”

Printy was named third team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media. The Marion, Iowa, native has earned Big Ten postseason honors in each of her three seasons as a Hawkeye. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and is a two-time second team All-Big Ten pick.

Printy is Iowa’s leading scorer at 16.9 points per game and 16.5 during conference action. She missed the final six games of the regular season after suffering a torn ACL at Wisconsin. Printy registered nine games with at least 20 points and dished out five or more assists on nine occasions. She ranks third in the Big Ten and eighth in the NCAA with an 88.8 free throw percentage and was also a Capital One Academic All-District selection.

“Jaime was having a great year before her injury,” Bluder said. “She was our leading scorer and was doing a fabulous job ofgetting to the free throw line. It was good to see the voters reward her hard work during the season, despite missing the last six games.”

Wahlin was a third team selection by the conference coaches and honorable mention pick by the media. She has now earned Big Ten postseason honors in all four years at Iowa. Wahlin was an All-Freshman team selection, third team All-Big Ten as a sophomore and honorable mention as a junior.

In conference action, Wahlin ranks second in 3-pointers made (2.6) and third in both assist/turnover ratio (1.7) and minutes played (1.7). The Crookston, Minn., native finished the season strong, averaging 16.3 points 4.3 assists while shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range during Iowa’s eight-game winning streak. Wahlin has reached double figures in the last 10 contests, including two 20-point games.

“I really can’t say enough good things about Kamille,” Bluder said. “She has been a steady performer for us all season, but has really stepped up her game in the final third of the year. Kamille has been a strong leader and someone the coaching staff could rely on throughout her career. I believe Kamille is one of the elite guards in the Big Ten.”

Logic was a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. She has also elevated her game in the final stretch of the regular season, averaging 13.1 points, 10.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists during the eight-game winning streak. Logic enters the Big Ten Tournament with four straight double-doubles and recorded the fourth triple-double in school history in Iowa’s regular season finale against Michigan. In Big Ten games, Logic finished tied for second in assists (4.7), third in offensive rebounds per game (3.3) and sixth in overall rebounding (7.9). She collected five or more rebounds in 21 of Iowa’s 29 games, including six double digit rebounding performances.

“Samantha’s game started clicking at the end of the season and everyone saw what a special player she is,” Bluder said. “She has really settled in and is performing at an impressive rate. To have four straight double-doubles and a triple-double, as a freshman, is not an easy accomplishment. We are really looking forward to watching Samantha’s growth during her career.”

Krei was named the Iowa women’s basketball team’s nominee for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. She is now eligible to be Iowa’s overall nominee for the award, which is decided in the spring. Krei has started all 29 games this season and was second on the team in rebounding during conference play with 6.7 boards per contest. Krei has been a Capital One Academic All-District selection and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten performer.

“Kelly is such a great ambassador for Iowa women’s basketball, both on and off the court,” Bluder said. “It’s very fitting that she is our Big Ten Sportsmanship nominee. Kelly excels in the classroom and is a great role model in the community.”

Bluder has now coached 15 players to 34 All-Big Ten honors, including 10 first team picks, nine second, nine third and six honorable mention selections. She has also had two Big Ten Freshman of the Year award winners, a Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year recipient, five members of the Big Ten All-Freshman team and two players named to the Big Ten All-Defensive team.
