IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s and women’s divers competed in the first day of the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships Thursday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The women’s divers competed in the one-meter, while the men competed on the three-meter springboard.
Senior Veronica Rydze placed eighth overall on the one-meter springboard with a combined score of 541.50. She posted a score of 278.45 in the preliminary round to advance to the finals. The top 18 divers in the preliminaries advanced to the finals.
Joelle Christy finished 22nd in the event with a score of 246.10. Lauren Kelba and Abby Grilli finished 27th and 28th in the event with scores of 236.40 and 234.50, respectively.
Sophomore Osvel Molina advanced to the finals in the three-meter springboard after posting a score of 317.70. He finished 15th overall with a score of 608.50. Arsen Sarkisian also competed in the event and finished 29th overall with a score of 236.00.
The women will compete on the three-meter tomorrow, while the men will compete on the one-meter. The championships will conclude on Saturday with platform diving.
35 divers from around the country will be invited to compete at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Selected divers will be announced after the conclusion of the Zone diving meets.
