ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTERS
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Incoming University of Iowa men’s basketball recruits Mike Gesell and Adam Woodbury will play in the second annual All-American Championship Sunday, April 1, at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La. The event features 40 of the best high school boys basketball players in the country.
Gesell and Woodbury will play on the 10-player North Team. The first game of the doubleheader will match the West vs. the East, followed by the North vs. the South. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (CT). Each game will be aired live on ESPN3.com with a rebroadcast of the doubleheader beginning at 8 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU.
Gesell, who averaged 24.8 points, 7.4 assists, five rebounds and 2.9 steals for South Sioux City High School was named the Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year this week for the second straight season. The 6-foot-1 guard became the all-time leading scorer in metro Sioux City history with 2,112, points and finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Nebraska Class A or B history.
Woodbury, who was recently named the captain of the Sioux City Journal’s All-Northwest Iowa boys basketball team, became just the 21st Iowa high school player to surpass 1,000 career rebounds, finishing his prep career with 1,003 rebounds. The 7-foot-1 center led Iowa Class 4A rebounders the last three years. He averaged 17 points per game as a senior and finished as Sioux City East’s all-time leading scorer and Sioux City’s second all-time leading scorer totaling 1,434 points.
Iowa is one of nine universities who will have two of its recruits playing in the showcase (Arizona, Baylor, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Syracuse and Texas). Seven of the other players on Gesell and Woodbury’s roster are slated to attend Big Ten universities this fall, the other is going to Notre Dame.
