Hawkeyes 2nd Among 17 Teams at Saluki Invite

Round 1 Results

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is in second place after the first round of the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. The Hawkeyes shot a 309 (+21) on Sunday after leading the 17-team field in par 4 scoring (+18), par 5 scoring (+1) and birdies (9). Iowa trails host Southern Illinois (301, +13) by eight strokes entering Monday’s final round.

“We had our highs and lows today,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “Chelsea (Harris) played very well and has positioned herself to go out and win the tournament tomorrow. There is definitely room for improvement and we are motivated to improve our play during the final round.”

UI senior Chelsea Harris is tied for first among 96 individuals after firing an even par 72 during the first round. Harris led the tournament by scoring a three-under on par 4’s. Harris is tied with Ashley Jeffers (Western Illinois) and Cassie Rushing (Southern Illinois).

Freshman Shelby Phillips also finished in the top-10 after the first round. Phillips is tied for eighth with a 77 (+5).

Junior Gigi DiGrazia and freshman Lauren English are tied for 26th after firing first round 80’s. Junior Kristi Cardwell rounded out the Iowa scorecard with an 81 (+9)

Southern Illinois is hosting the 36-hole tournament at the 6,075 yard, par 72 Hickory Ridge Golf Course.

The Hawkeyes return to the links at 9 a.m. (CT) on Monday for the final 18-holes
