THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa track and field team will head to the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday. The meet will be held at Audrey J. Walton stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Live results will be available on the hawkeyesports.com schedule page.
IN THE RANKINGS
The men’s track team is ranked 17th in the USTFCCCA national rankings.
AMONG THE NCAA TOP TEN
The Hawkeyes are ranked in the NCAA top 10 in five events. Senior Troy Doris is ranked third in the triple jump. Doris reached the 53-6 1/2 (16.32m) mark at the Battle on the Bayou on April 7. The men’s 1,600-meter relay team is currently ranked 10th in the nation for their performance at the Arkansas Spring Invitational on Mar. 30. The team of junior Justin Austin, senior Patrick Richards, freshman Brennan Davey, and senior Erik Sowinski crossed the line in 3:06.49. Sowinski also currently ranks fourth in the nation in the 800 meters. Sowinski ran a school record setting time of 1:47.02 at the Battle on the Bayou on April 7. Senior Jeffery Herron’s school record setting performance in the high jump (7-4 1/4; 2.24m) currently ranks third in the nation. Herron recorded the mark at the Battle on the Bayou on April 7. McKenzie Melander’s 5,000 meters time of 15:57.13 is currently ranked fifth in the nation. Melander ran the personal best time at the Stanford Invitational on April 6th.
HERRON BREAKS HIGH JUMP RECORD
Senior Jeffery Herron broke Iowa’s high jump record April 7 at the Battle on the Bayou. Herron reached the 7-4 1/4 (2.24m). Herron’s mark just beat the previous school record of 7-04 (2.23m) held by Bill Hansen (1978) and Bill Knoedel (1975). Herron’s mark, which ranks third in the nation, is four inches better than his previous best.
SOWINSKI RACES TO SCHOOL RECORD
Senior Erik Sowinski broke the school record in the 800 meters April 7 at the Battle on the Bayou. Sowinski crossed the line in 1:47.02 to beat the previous school record of 1:47.64 set in 1962 by Bill Frazier. Sowinski’s time currently ranks fourth in the nation.
MELANDER CLIMBS THE RANKINGS
Senior McKenzie Melander recorded a personal best performance at the Stanford Invitational on April six. Melander’s time of 15:57.13 ranks second all-time at Iowa behind Nan Doak’s time of 15:45.84 set in 1985. Melander holds the school record in the indoor mile (4:39.78).
BYERS ATOP THE BIG TEN
Senior Matt Byers is currently ranked first in the Big Ten in the javelin. Byers recorded a throw of 223-3 (68.06m) at the Arkansas Spring Invitational on Mar. 30. The meet was Byers only performance of the 2012 season. Byers currently holds the school record in the event (245-8; 74.89m).
4X4 RUNS SEASON BEST TIME
The women’s 1,600-meter relay team ran a season best time of 3:37.57 at the Battle on the Bayou. That time ranks fourth all-time at Iowa, and is currently ranked fourth in the Big Ten. The 1,600-meter relay team will defend its Big Ten title May 11th.
