IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa defensive back Jordan Bernstine was selected by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft Saturday. Bernstine is the sixth Iowa player selected in the 2012 draft and the 51st Hawkeye player to be drafted under Kirk Ferentz.
Detroit selected OL Riley Reiff in the first round, DL Mike Daniels was a fourth round selection of the Green Bay Packers, OL Adam Gettis was a fifth round selection of the Washington Redskins, DB Shaun Prater was taken in the fifth round by Cincinnati and Marvin McNutt, Jr. was a sixth round selection of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Bernstine (5-11, 205) appeared in 12 games with 11 starts in 2011. He recorded 44 solo tackles, assisted on 45 tackles, recorded three tackles for loss and one quarterback sack. His 7.4 tackles per game ranked 10th in the Big Ten.
Bernstine was one of 11 true freshmen to see action in 2007 after a successful prep career at Des Moines Lincoln. He missed some time due to injury, including the entire 2009 season, but returned to the field in 2010 and is now the 11th defensive back drafted by the NFL under Kirk Ferentz.
During his career, Bernstine helped the Hawkeyes appear in four consecutive bowl games, as Iowa claimed wins in the 2009 Outback Bowl (South Carolina), 2010 Orange Bowl (Georgia Tech) and 2010 Insight Bowl (Missouri) before being defeated in the 2011 Insight Bowl (Oklahoma). Iowa posted a 35-17 record over the past four seasons.
With Bernstine being the sixth Iowa player selected in the 2012 draft, Iowa has had 18 players selected in the last three years. That is the highest three-year total in the history of the Iowa program. Iowa had 16 players selected between 1956-58 and again between 1958-60.
