IOWA CITY, IOWA — University of Iowa wide receiver Marvin McNutt, Jr. was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft Saturday. McNutt is the fifth Iowa player selected in 2012, and the 50th Hawkeye player under Kirk Ferentz to be drafted.
Detroit selected OL Riley Reiff in the first round, DL Mike Daniels was a fourth round selection of the Green Bay Packers, OL Adam Gettis was a fifth round selection of the Washington Redskins and DB Shaun Prater was taken in the fifth round by Cincinnati.
McNutt (6-4, 215) was named the Richter-Howard Wide Receiver of the Year in 2011 after catching 82 passes for 1,315 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was first team all-Big Ten by both coaches and media. He was named a permanent team captain and was named offensive MVP.
The St. Louis (Hazelwood Central HS) native is the third wide receiver to play under Ferentz at Iowa to be selected in the draft. McNutt holds Iowa records for receiving yards in a season (1,315) and career (2,861), and single season (12) and career touchdown receptions (28). He tied the single season reception mark with his 82 catches this past season. He led the Big Ten in receiving yards per game, was second in receptions per game and sixth in all-purpose yards. He joined the Iowa program as a quarterback before moving to wide receiver as a redshirt freshman.
During his career McNutt helped the Hawkeyes appear in four consecutive bowl games, as Iowa claimed wins in the 2009 Outback Bowl (South Carolina), 2010 Orange Bowl (Georgia Tech) and 2010 Insight Bowl (Missouri) before being defeated in the 2011 Insight Bowl (Oklahoma). Iowa posted a 35-17 record over the past five seasons.
With McNutt being the fifth Iowa player selected in the 2012 draft, Iowa has had 17 players selected in the last three years. That is the highest three-year total in the history of the Iowa program. Iowa had 16 players selected between 1956-58 and again between 1958-60.
