Mike Daniels Selected by Green Bay in Fourth Round

April 28, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa defensive lineman Mike Daniels was selected by Green Bay in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft on Saturday. Daniels is the second Iowa player selected, as OL Riley Reiff was selected in the first round by Detroit Thursday. Daniels is the 47th Hawkeye player under Kirk Ferentz to be drafted and the ninth defensive lineman.

Daniels is the fourth defensive lineman taken in the last two years, as Iowa was the only school in the nation to have three defensive linemen selected in 2011. He is the second Hawkeye to be selected by the Packers in the past three seasons, as OL Bryan Bulaga was selected in the first round in 2010.

Daniels (6-1, 280) is a native of Blackwood, N.J., where he attended Highland Regional HS. He started all 13 games at defensive tackle in 2011 and had 21 career starts. Daniels was named second team all-Big Ten as a senior by league coaches and was honorable mention by league media. He earned the team Iron Hawk Award as a senior and was a permanent team captain on defense.

Daniels joined the Iowa program with little fanfare following his prep career, but proved to be a reliable cog at his tackle position. He led Iowa in QB sacks (9-53) and tackles for loss (13.5-63) as a senior, while recording 32 solo tackles and 35 assists overall. He had a career-best nine tackles on two occasions, most recently in Iowa’s 2011 contest at Nebraska.

During his career Daniels helped the Hawkeyes appear in four consecutive bowl games, as Iowa claimed wins in the 2009 Outback Bowl (South Carolina), 2010 Orange Bowl (Georgia Tech) and 2010 Insight Bowl (Missouri) before being defeated in the 2011 Insight Bowl (Oklahoma). Iowa posted a 35-17 record over the past five seasons.
