Washington Selects Adam Gettis in Fifth Round

April 28, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa offensive lineman Adam Gettis was selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft on Saturday. Gettis is the third Iowa player selected, as OL Riley Reiff was selected in the first round by Detroit Thursday and DL Mike Daniels was selected by Green Bay late in the fourth round. Gettis is the 48th Hawkeye player under Kirk Ferentz to be drafted and the 13th offensive lineman.

Reiff was the 23rd player selected on Thursday, while Daniels was selection No. 132 and Gettis was the 141st pick.

Gettis (6-4, 280) is a native of Frankfort, Ill. and attended Lincoln Way East HS. He started all 13 games at right guard in 2011 and had 16 career starts. Gettis was named second team all-Big Ten as a senior by league coaches and was honorable mention by league media. He earned the Hayden Fry “Extra Heartbeat” Award for his play as a senior.

During his career Gettis helped the Hawkeyes appear in four consecutive bowl games, as Iowa claimed wins in the 2009 Outback Bowl (South Carolina), 2010 Orange Bowl (Georgia Tech) and 2010 Insight Bowl (Missouri) before being defeated in the 2011 Insight Bowl (Oklahoma). Iowa posted a 35-17 record over the past five seasons.

Iowa had six players selected in both the 2010 and 2011 drafts, a total that ranked third best in the nation.
