OMAHA, Neb. — Fourteen University of Iowa swimmers competed on America’s biggest swimming stage last week at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha.
Former Hawkeye Ryan Phelan posted the highest finish by a UI swimmer, touching the wall in 36th place in the 50 free Saturday with a time of 23.01. Paul Gordon (64th, 23.27), junior Gianni Sesto (89th, 23.45) and sophomore Brian Donatelli (156th, 23.97) also competed in the event.
Senior Byron Butler and Gordon also swam in the 100 fly on June 30. Butler touched out in 54.39 to finish 41st, while Gordon was 75th in 55.05.
Junior Tyler Lentz finished in the top 67 in two events. He posted a time of 2:05.68 to touch the wall in 60th place in the 200 IM and 4:30.79 in the 400 IM to finish 67th.
Sophomore Grant Betulius led a group of three UI swimmers in the 100 back, finishing 41st with a time of 56.69. Butler posted a time of 57.42 to place 69th, while junior Dustin Rhoads finished 109th, clocking in at 58.37. Daniela Cubelic competed in the women’s 100 back event on June 26, finishing 156th with a time of 1:06.02.
Senior Jordan Huff and Gordon both swam in the 100 and 200 free events. Huff finished 40th in the 200 (1:51.12) and 65th in the 100 (50.93), while Gordon was 59th in the 100 (50.87) and 71st in the 200 (1:52.24).
Junior Andrew Marciniak posted an 84th place showing in the 100 breast to open the Trials on June 25, finishing with a time of 1:04.45. He also tallied a 112th place finish in the 200 breast (2:23.37) on June 28.
