IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Kristi Cardwell and sophomore Shelby Phillips teamed up for a third place finish at the 2012 Pure Silk Collegiate Team Championship, presented by the National Golf Coaches Association. The event was held July 31-Aug. 2 at Wedgewood Golf & Country Club in Powell, Ohio. The Hawkeye teammates finished one stroke out of second place just two strokes behind the winning team from Tennessee.
The event paired teammates from over 40 Division I institutions in a three-day challenge consisting of alternate shot, best ball and team stroke play. Division II, Division III and NAIA schools also competed in the challenge.
The tournament began with 18 holes of alternate shot play and the Cardwell/Phillips duo carded a 73 (+1). Cardwell and Phillips followed with an impressive 67 (-5) in best ball play on day two.
Iowa’s team moved up the leaderboard in the final day during team stroke play, firing a combined score of 148 (+4) to finish tied for third. Phillips started her round with 13-straight pars before a bogey on the 14th hole. She then recorded four more pars for a 73 (+1). Cardwell bogeyed the first hole and carded seven-consecutive pars for a 37 (+1) on the front nine. She bogeyed 10 and 11, but rallied with a birdie on 15 and finished with three pars for a 75 (+3).
The Hawkeyes open the fall season Sept. 10-11 at the Chip-N-Club Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska.
