IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey team will host its Black & Gold Scrimmage tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Grant Field. The scrimmage will be open to the public.
Iowa will host its annual media day at the conclusion of the scrimmage. Media are encouraged to attend the scrimmage for photo and video opportunities. Head coach Tracey Griesbaum and the Hawkeyes will be available for interviews following the conclusion of the scrimmage.
Griesbaum returns 15 letterwinners from a 2011 team that made the program’s 21st NCAA Tournament appearance. Offensively, Iowa returns nine of the 11 players that netted a goal in 2011. The nine returnees accounted for 64 percent of the team’s goals (42-of-66) and 68 percent of the team’s points (114-of-167). Defensively, the Hawkeyes welcome back All-Big Ten goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw, who led the Big Ten in shutouts (5) and save percentage (.768) in 2011.
The Black & Gold Scrimmage will be one of two exhibitions for the Hawkeyes before the 2012 season. Iowa will play its second exhibition at Northwestern on Aug. 18. Action will begin at 1 p.m. in Evanston, Ill.
The Hawkeyes open regular season play at the Big/Ten Challenge on Aug. 25-26, facing Wake Forest (Aug. 25) and North Carolina (Aug. 26) on the campus of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
