Aug. 22, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Three University of Iowa field hockey players — Jessica Barnett, Kathleen McGraw and Karli Johansen — appear on the 2012 Big Ten Field Hockey Players to Watch List, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Barnett, a senior from North Vancouver, Canada, was an All-America and All-Big Ten selection in 2011 after ranking second on the team in goals (11) and points (24). Barnett enters her fourth year as a starter in 2012, as she has started all 56 games in which she has played.

McGraw, a goalkeeper, also enters her fourth year as a starter for the Hawkeyes and has started 53 of the 54 games she has competed in. The senior from Atherton, Calif., earned second team All-Big Ten honors in 2011, after leading the conference in shutouts (5) and save percentage (.768).

Barnett and McGraw will both serve as team captains in 2012. They were also captains in 2011.

Johansen, a junior from North Vancouver, Canada, helped anchor an Iowa defense that posted a conference-leading six shutouts in 2011 by leading the team with three defensive saves as a sophomore. She spent her summer with the Canadian Junior National Team, and was selected to compete in the 2012 Pan American Championships.

The 12th-ranked Hawkeyes open their season this weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Iowa faces No. 13 Wake Forest on Saturday and No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday. Both games will begin a 1 p.m. (CT) at Ketner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
