Another 'Colorful' Season Awaits

Aug. 22, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Another “colorful” season of University of Iowa football is fast approaching and, this year, the plan includes a game away from historic Kinnick Stadium.

Kirk Ferentz’s 14th UI football team opens its 2012 season Saturday, Sept. 1, against Northern Illinois at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. Iowa time. Tickets to that game – including a discount-priced package – are available and can be purchased online by clicking HERE.

The game against the defending Mid-America Conference champion Huskies is the first of two games on the Hawkeyes’ schedule where fans are encouraged to wear gold to show their support of the Hawkeyes. Iowa’s second “Be Bold, Wear Gold” game is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, when Iowa completes back-to-back games against intrastate rivals by entertaining Northern Iowa at 2:30 p.m. Iowa time at Kinnick.

Iowa opens its 2012 home schedule a week earlier – Saturday, Sept. 8 – against Iowa State in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game. In addition to battling for the braggin’ rights and the new trophy that will come with a victory, the Hawkeyes will be celebrating the UI’s 1921 and 1922 Big Ten championship teams by wearing “Throwback” jerseys that look similar to those worn by Iowa’s first conference championship teams.

The 2012 Black and Gold Spirit Game will once again be a prime time event. Fans will be asked to wear black and gold by section on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 20, when Iowa entertains Penn State in the second annual ANF Day at Historic Kinnick Stadium. The rules remain the same: fans in odd section numbers wear black, fans in even numbered sections wear gold.

The annual celebration of the heritage and innovation of the Iowa farmer will take place all afternoon inside the ANF Legends tent on the Krause Family Plaza. Fans are encouraged to visit that location for a special autograph session with former Hawkeyes and receive ANF merchandise while supplies last.

The 2012 Blackout Game is set for Saturday, Nov. 10, when Iowa entertains Purdue and salutes America’s veterans as part of the nation’s Veteran’s Day activities.

UI students are always encouraged to wear the same color as their student peers on the playing field: Black. The official UI student t-shirt for the 2012 football season offers an interesting twist, too. There are actually four shirts with each proudly displaying an “I” or an “O” or a “W” or an “A.” Ui students are encouraged to pick up their 2012 season tickets in groups of four friends….or to have fun and make new friends on game days.

The official t-shirts for the Be Bold, Wear Gold and 2012 Blackout games in addition to official America Needs Farmers gear can be purchased HERE.

The official 2012 Iowa Football Fan T and a myriad of other black and gold items can be purchased HERE.
