ROCHESTER, Mich. — The University of Iowa volleyball team defeated Toledo, 3-1, on Saturday morning in its second match of the Golden Grizzlies Invitational (25-18, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23). The Hawkeyes move to 5-1 with the victory. The match was held at Athletics Center O’rena on the campus of Oakland University.

Junior Bethany Yeager led the defense with a match-high 24 digs. She moves to 10th all-time in program history with 1,125 career digs. Three Hawkeyes registered double-digit kills. Junior Rachael Bedell notched a match-high 17 kills. Sophomore Alex Lovell added 14 and freshman Erin Radke tallied 10. Junior Nikki Dailey led Iowa with a match-high 43 assists.

Iowa jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the opening set behind kills from Radke, Chante’ Thompson and Lovell. The Hawkeyes maintained their lead throughout the frame, leading by as many as eight points. Toledo cut the advantage to five points late in the set at 23-18, but a kill by Thompson and a Toledo attack error gave Iowa a 25-18 first set victory. Radke led the way with four kills and Dailey turned in seven assists. Yeager notched a set-high 12 digs. Six Hawkeyes registered a kill en route to a .220 attack percentage, opposed to .023 for Toledo.

Toledo (1-4) responded in the second set. The Rockets grabbed a 6-1 lead and never looked back, winning 25-14 to even the match at a set apiece. Radke and Thompson each registered three kills.

The Hawkeyes answered in the third game. Iowa opened with a 7-3 lead. Toledo cut the advantage to 12-9, but the Hawkeyes used a 3-0 run to push the score to 15-9. Iowa extended its lead to 22-14, before Toledo responded with a 7-0 run, making the score 22-21. The Hawkeyes claimed three of the final four points to win 25-22 and grab a 2-1 match advantage. Dailey (12 assists), Bedell (seven kills) and Yeager (six digs) all notched set-highs.

Iowa finished off the Rockets in the fourth set, winning 25-23. The two teams went back-and-forth until Toledo took a 16-12 lead. The Hawkeyes called a timeout and answered with a 6-2 run to even the match at 18-18. Both squads exchanged points, leading to a 23-23 score. An attack error on Toledo led to a set-point kill by Thompson which gave Iowa the 3-1 match victory. Lovell turned in a set-best eight kills and Bedell recorded six as the Hawkeyes registered a .444 attack percentage. Dailey added a set-high 18 assists.

Iowa, 2-0 in the Oakland Tournament, concludes action tonight against host Oakland at 6 p.m. (CT).
