3 Hawkeyes Named to Watch List

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s golf team has three players named to the Big Ten Men’s Golf Players to Watch List, the conference office announced Tuesday. Junior Steven Ihm and sophomores Ian Vandersee and Joseph Winslow earned the preseason honor.

Ihm earned second team All-Big Ten and PING All-Region honors last season in his first year with the program. The Peosta, Iowa, native transferred to Iowa from Indian Hills Community College, and immediately had an impact as a full-time starter. Ihm had three top-20 finishes in regular season stroke play events. He was the team’s low scorer at the Rod Myers Invitational (213), U.S. Collegiate Championships (213) and the LSU National Invitational (213). He had a 73.6 stroke average last season.

Vandersee was also a full-time starter for the Hawkeyes last season, earning PING All-Region honors in his freshman season. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native had a 74.9 stroke average. The highlight of his season came in the NCAA Athens Regional, when he fired a 6 6 in the final round to help Iowa advance to the NCAA Championships by one stroke.

Winslow became the sixth Hawkeye in program history to earn All-American honors last season. Winslow, from Overland Park, Kan., placed 13th at the NCAA Championships after firing a 54-hole total of 215 (+2) to become an honorable mention All-American. Winslow competed in five invitationals last spring season with a 75.13 stroke average.

The Hawkeyes begin the season with the eighth annual Golden Gopher Invitational this weekend in Wayzata, Minn., at the Spring Hill Golf Club. Action begins on Monday with the first and second rounds, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The final round will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start as well.
