STANFORD, Calif. — The 10th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell to No. 16 Stanford, 3-2, on Friday at Stanford’s Varsity Field Hockey Turf. The game featured two evenly matched teams, as neither team recorded a significant advantage in shots (12-11, Stanford) or penalty corners (7-6, Stanford).

“We played really well in the first half, but didn’t execute in the second,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “It ended up a one goal deficit. The stats were pretty even. They had one more shot and one more penalty corner, hence one more goal.”

The Hawkeyes (2-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as junior Niki Schultheis scored her first goal of the season at the 2:03 mark after collecting a loose ball.

Stanford’s Maddie Secco evened the contest at one by scoring during the 17th minute of action.

Senior Jessica Barnett put Iowa back in the lead at the 22:07 mark, scoring off a penalty corner. Schultheis and junior Marike Stribos were credited with assists on the play. Barnett, a North Vancouver, Canada, native, has scored a team-high four goals this season.

Stanford used a goal off a penalty corner to tie the score at two. Lauren Becker scored via Hope Burke and Beckey Dru assists with less than four minutes left in the opening period.

Both teams tightened their defense after the halftime break, as only one goal was scored in the second period.

Stanford posted the deciding goal in the 46th minute, once again scoring off a penalty corner. Kelsey Harbin found the back of the goal, while Dru and Kasey Quon assisted on the play.

Senior Kathleen McGraw suffered the loss in goal for Iowa. McGraw (2-2) made four stops against the Cardinal.

The Hawkeyes will remain in Stanford, Calif., for two more contests. Iowa faces Pacific on Sunday and UC Davis on Monday. Both games will start a 1 p.m. (CT) and will be played at Stanford’s Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
