MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The University of Iowa volleyball team fell at Marquette on Saturday in straight sets in its final match of the Marquette Invitational (18-25, 14-25, 18-25). The Hawkeyes fall to 8-5 on the season. The match was held at the Al McGuire Center on the campus of Marquette University.
Junior Nikki Dailey recorded her seventh-straight double-double, and team-best ninth overall, with 30 assists and 12 digs. Classmate Bethany Yeager led the defense with 15 digs. Sophomore Alex Lovell added 10. Freshman Erin Radke registered a match-high 12 kills and junior Rachael Bedell notched 11.
Yeager was named to the all-tournament team. She registered 67 digs in the three-match tournament. Yeager ranks seventh all-time in program history with 1,266 career digs.
Marquette (8-3) jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the opening set, forcing a Hawkeye timeout. Iowa trimmed the Golden Eagle advantage to three points at 11-8, before the home team used a 10-3 run to open up a 21-12 lead. The Hawkeyes claimed six of the final 10 points, but Marquette won the opening set, 25-18. Bedell equaled a set-high with five kills as Iowa hit .303. Yeager added a set-best eight digs.
Iowa, competing in its final nonconference match, led 4-2 early in the second frame. The Golden Eagles, a 2011 NCAA Tournament team, used a 7-1 run to grab a 9-5 advantage and force a Hawkeye timeout. Marquette controlled the set the rest of the way, taking a 2-0 match lead with a 25-14 victory. Radke paced Iowa with three kills.
The hosts jumped out to an 11-5 advantage in the third set and never relinquished the lead, winning 25-18. Marquette hit .321 in the final frame and limited the Hawkeyes to a .175 attack percentage. Iowa recorded 14 kills. Radke turned in a set-high six and Bedell added five. Dailey recorded a set-best 12 assists.
Iowa opens Big Ten action next Friday at Ohio State. The Hawkeyes and Buckeyes will square off at 6 p.m. (CT). The match will be shown live on BTN.com.
