IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened its fall season Friday with competition at the Purdue Fall Invitational and Drake Fall Invitational.
Juniors Chase Tomlins and Joey White led the way for Iowa in Flight A, going 2-1 with a second-place finish at Drake. Tomlins and White began their day with a pair of 9-8 victories over Lott and Mullis of Drake and then Amir and Cadieux of Northern Illinois, respectively. Tomlins and White fell in the championship match to Ghorbel and Goodman of Drake, 8-4.
The other Hawkeye doubles pair at Drake was Alejandro Rios and Rob Trower. The duo fell in their first two matches, losing to Lee and Norman of Creighton 8-6, then Drake and Tesmer of Drake 8-2, but bounced back and beat Bakke and Biermat of North Dakota, 8-6, for a seventh place finish in Flight B.
Matt Hagan and Jonas Dierckx went 2-0 and advanced to the quarter finals in Flight A at Purdue. Hagan and Dierckx first defeated Ford and Marks of Cleveland State in convincing fashion, 8-1, and followed that up with an 8-3 victory over Finkenbrink and Leto of Green Bay. Hagan and Dierckx will face Moe and Diaz from Xavier in the quarter finals. Also in doubles action at Purdue, Dominic Patrick and Andres Estenssoro fell to Mamalat and Packowitz of Marquette, 8-4, and Bandy and Krull of Xavier, 8-5.
Dierckx maintained his stellar play from doubles and won his Flight A singles match, defeating Daniel Kang (IPFW) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Dierckx will face Jason Jaruvang (IUPUI) in the next round on Saturday.
Estenssoro (6-2, 5-7, 6-3), Hagan (4-6, 7-6, 6-3) and Patrick (6-3, 6-2) each fell in their singles matches.
Competition resumes Saturday morning at both tournaments.
