IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team continued its fall season Saturday with competition at Drake Fall Invitational and Purdue Fall Invitational.
Hawkeyes Joey White and Rob Trower got off to fast starts at Drake, winning both of their opening matches and have themselves in position to compete for a third place finish on Sunday. White, who is competing in Flight B, defeated Juan Luis Chu of Gustavus Adolphus 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round. White fell in his second match losing to Robin Goodman of Drake 6-1, 6-0. White will play his final match Sunday against Ryan Norman of Creighton. Trower, who is competing in Flight C, defeated Brad Entwistle of Gustavus Adolphus 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round. Trower fell in his second match to Axel Lagerolf of Northern Illinois 6-4, 6-2. Trower’s final match will be against Grant Tesmer of Drake.
Iowa junior Chase Tomlins competed in Flight A, going 1-1 at Drake. Tomlins fell in his opening round to Alen Salibasic of Drake 6-2, 6-2, but rebounded nicely in his second match, defeating Amrik Donkena of Gustavus Adolphus 6-3, 6-1. Hawkeye sophomore Alejandro Rios was the fourth player to see action at Drake, going 1-1. Rios fell in his first match to Quinn Dippel of Creighton, but rallied to beat Grant Bakke of North Dakota 6-7. 6-3, 7-5.
Both Dominic Patrick and Andres Estenssoro went 2-0 at Purdue on Saturday for the Hawkeyes. Patrick, competing in Flight A, defeated Gerard Guell of IPFW 6-1, 6-4 to start off they day and then followed that up with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Eric Honert of Valpo. Estenssoro, competing in Flight B, began his day with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jimmy Beckwith of Western Michigan. Estenssoro carried that momentum into his next match and defeated Freddy Abunku of Xavier 6-2, 6-3. Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan both fell in their respective matches on Saturday.
Two Iowa doubles teams saw action on Saturday. Hagan and Dierckx, who went 2-0 on Friday, fell in their only match to Moe and Diaz of Xavier. The other Hawkeye duo that competed was Patrick and Estenssoro, and they fell to another Xavier duo, Bandy and Krull 8-5.
Competition concludes tomorrow at both tournaments.
