IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Michigan on Friday night in its Big Ten home opener (14-25, 21-25, 20-25). The match, Iowa’s first at home in its last 12 contests, was played on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Nikki Dailey registered her team-leading 11th double-double of the season, tallying 23 assists and 10 digs. The junior has recorded a double-double in nine of Iowa’s last 10 contests. Classmate Bethany Yeager paced the Hawkeyes with 14 digs and senior Allison Straumann added 13. Freshman Erin Radke led Iowa with nine kills.
“I thought we passed the ball very well,” said head coach Sharon Dingman. “We did some things well; we just have to kill the ball.”
Michigan (14-3, 2-1) jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the opening set, forcing a Hawkeye timeout. Iowa responded with a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 10-8. The Wolverines answered, taking control with a 6-0 run on their way to a 25-14 first set victory. The visitors hit .306 in the opening frame while limiting the home team to a .137 attack percentage. Dailey notched a set-best 11 assists and Yeager equaled a set-high with nine digs.
The Wolverines took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-21 second set win. With the frame tied 13-13, Michigan used a 9-2 run to open up a 22-15 advantage. The Hawkeyes rallied to make the score 24-21, but an Iowa service error gave the visitors their second set victory. Radke paced the Hawkeyes with four kills and Alex Lovell led Iowa with six digs.
Michigan won the third set, 25-20, to complete the sweep. The Wolverines ran out to a 13-5 lead in the frame. The Hawkeyes answered, cutting the advantage to 20-18. Michigan then scored five of the final seven points to earn the set victory. Alli O’Deen turned in nine digs in the frame.
