IOWA CITY, Iowa – For University of Iowa football coordinators Greg Davis and Phil Parker, the more things change, the more they stay the same this week, as the Hawkeyes prepare for Saturday’s home contest against Purdue.
Like Indiana a week ago, the Purdue defense features a pair of veteran defensive tackles that can clog things up in the middle for the Iowa offense. And, similar to the Indiana offense last week, the Purdue offense Saturday will likely feature more than one quarterback.
“Purdue is a team that has played multiple guys at the quarterback position,” said Parker. “They are going to run their offense. It may change some from player to player, but basically they will keep to their offense and stick with their game plan.”
Iowa has used a number of players in the defensive line in recent weeks, and Parker says that will again be the plan heading into Saturday’s contest.
“Rotating the guys has helped keep the guys fresh,” said Parker. “We have a good group of guys working up front and it helps to keep more guys prepared and ready to go in there. We expect them to play at a high level.”
The Iowa offense knows Purdue has veterans leading the way in the Boilermaker defensive front.
“Purdue is a team that is game-plan specific,” said Davis. “One thing we do know is that they have a couple of big, veteran guys in the defensive front who play good football.”
For an Iowa offensive line that has shuffled some players over the last two weeks due to injuries, that means using past experience to help this week.
“We’re playing a lot of guys due to the injuries,” said Davis. “But every time they go out there, they get a little more cohesive and play with a little better understanding of what they need to do.”
The Hawkeyes and Boilermakers meet at 11:01 a.m. Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in a contest that will be televised by BTN. Due to a number of Veterans Day activities, fans are encouraged to be in their seats early Saturday, as pre-game activities are slated to begin at 10:35 a.m.
