IOWA CITY, Iowa — Eric May is one of two seniors and the only three-time letterwinner on the University of Iowa men’s basketball team. The native of Dubuque, Iowa, has played 101 games in his career, scoring 703 points (7.0 points per game).May is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time team captain.
How does it feel to be the old guy in the locker room?
May: (Laughter) I am the old guy. I’m like two years older than anybody in there. I have the wisdom, I guess.
What will you remember most about your years at the University of Iowa?
May: I will remember how loyal the fan base has been and how big of a change it has been since my first year to my last year; how exciting it has gotten and how much more energy has come to the program.
You have been through the Big Ten Conference basketball wars. What advice do you have for the youngsters on the team?
May: You have to stay at it every day. You can’t take a day off, nobody else is. The Big Ten is the real deal, but also go out there and play comfortably. Don’t be anxious when you go out and play.
How do you want to be remembered by Hawkeye fans?
May: As a loyal Hawk through and through. I stuck with the program when things weren’t that great; also one who helped take us to the NCAA Tournament.
If you had to name one on-court highlight as a player here, what would it be?
May: Those wins over the top 25 teams are always a highlight. When you beat a team in your own house and the fans rush the court, there is nothing better than that.

How has the attitude or perception of this program changed since you arrived on campus in 2009?
May: The anticipation, the excitement. It was kind of an afterthought when I got here and when the coaches came in they brought a ton of energy and they brought a ton of recognition to the program. It’s exciting.
You are already a two-time academic All-Big Ten selection with a degree in accounting. What is your next step after basketball?
May: I would like to own my own business eventually. Accounting isn’t really that glamorous, so I don’t know how long I would be in that.
What would be your storybook ending to your college basketball career?
May: Win a Big Ten championship and go deep into the NCAA Tournament. That is what our goal is. We don’t want to accept anything less than that.
What excites you most about beginning the 2012-13 season?
May: What excites me is how much energy these new guys are bringing in and how much energy the old guys have. We’re just ready to go and get it under way.
What aspect of your game do you hang your hat on most?
May: Trying to be the hardest worker on the court every time I’m out there. Also defense, that is going to be a big focus for us this year.
What does that mean being a two-time team captain?
May: It means a lot to be selected to be a captain. I like the responsibility of being able to talk with coaches and talk with these guys and handle issues within ourselves. I feel good that players can come to talk to me and we can take care of things.
