Weekly Release

THIS WEEK The University of Iowa women’s golf team will open its 2013 spring season at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida. The 54-hole tournament will be played at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club, 6,018 yards, par-71.

QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Menzel “We are really looking forward to opening the season in Miami this weekend. Deering Bay is a beautiful facility and the competition will be strong. I am very impressed with the amount of work that our team has put in during the off season and the amount of focus they have brought to each practice these past two weeks. We definitely have some lofty goals for the spring season and I think we have learned we must approach each tournament with great preparation and commitment to taking it one shot at a time. We are looking to Cardwell, Phillips and English to lead us into this spring campaign. As a unit, they have returned looking the best that I have seen them. Midkiff has returned to campus with a lot of confidence this spring and DiGrazia continues to bring great energy and motivation to our roster on a daily basis. It’s great that we are able to take two individuals this early in the season and we look forward to Rae and Ihm continuing to improve to this spring. We are gaining some depth on our roster through hard work and I look for some Hawkeyes to step up and help us this spring.”

THE LINE-UP Kristi Cardwell, Lauren English, Shelby Phillips, Briana Midkiff, and Gigi DiGrazia will be competing for the Hawkeyes in the Hurricane Invitational. Nicole Rae and Amy Ihm will be competing as individuals.

FALL RECAP Senior Kristi Cardwell led Iowa with a 76.33 stroke average during the fall season. Lauren English led Iowa with two top-10 finishes during her fall campaign while Cardwell recorded one. Both Shelby Phillips and Cardwell posted their first career hole-in-one during the fall season. Collectively the Hawkeyes recorded four rounds at or below par during the fall season. Iowa’s best finish of the fall season was fifth place at the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln, NE.

ENGLISH SHINES DURING FALL SEASON Junior Lauren English put together an impressive 2012 fall campaign. English was the Hawkeyes’ top performer in three out the four tournaments during the fall season. English carded the lowest individual 18-hole round of the fall season with a 68 (-4), also a career best, at the Johnie Imes Invitational.
