IOWA CITY, Iowa — The No. 8 University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team defeated No. 10 Nebraska (427.500-425.400) this evening inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena to pick up its third-straight dual win of the season. The Hawkeyes claimed five event titles against the Huskers.
“So, once is luck, two is a coincidence, three means we’re getting something happening here,” said head coach JD Reive. “That’s a big part of today. We’ve been gearing up for this all year. We have work that we have to do, but it’s absolutely within our grasp to do quickly and fix some things. It is literally anybody’s game when we change the rules next week.”
Matt Loochtan led the Hawkeyes on floor exercise with a score of 14.900, earning fourth place. Javier Balboa followed closely behind placing fifth with a 14.500. Nebraska’s Louis Klein scored a 15.200 to claim the floor exercise title.
Doug Sullivan placed second (14.000) to pace Iowa on pommel horse. Anton Gryshayev scored a 13.800, earning fourth place. Eric Schryver of Nebraska took the event title with a 14.600. The Hawkeyes outscored the Huskers 67.450-67.300 on pommel.
Loochtan scored a 14.950 on vault to pick up Iowa’s first event title of the meet. William Albert tied for third place with Nebraska’s Grant Perdue with a score of 14.650. Iowa and Nebraska both earned a team score of 72.450 to tie on vault.
Gryshayev earned his fifth first place finish of the season on rings, scoring a 15.100. Balboa claimed second place with a score of 15.050. Albert and Jack Boyle both earned 14.700 to tie for third place. Iowa dominated Nebraska on rings, outscoring the Huskers 73.950-69.950.
Mitchell Landau took the parallel bars title with a score of 15.100. Balboa scored a 14.950 to earn second place. The Hawkeyes finished the event with 71.200, topping the Huskers’ 69.950.
Landau claimed the event title on the high bar, scoring a 15.000. He was followed by Nebraska’s Eric Schryver (14.500) in second and C.J. Schaaf (14.350) in third.
“Landau showed up today like a champ,” said Rieve. “He goes in and bangs out a parallel bars set then does the same thing and bangs out a high bars set. It’s really comforting from a team perspective knowing that if you do make a mistake, everybody has your back. That’s been a big part of what we’re building.”
Balboa finished with an 85.900 to earn the all-around title. C.J. Schaaf of Nebraska earned second with an 83.600. Lance Alberhasky scored an 82.200 to finish third in the all-around.
The Hawkeyes will travel to Minneapolis on March 2 to take on No. 6 Minnesota for the second time this season. The event is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
