IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team earned a hard-fought victory over Western Michigan, 4-3, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on Sunday. The Hawkeyes have now won six matches in a row to improve their record to 6-1 on the spring season.
Iowa started off strong winning 2-of-3 doubles matches to gain the lone doubles point. Joey White and Juan Estenssoro dominated with an 8-0 victory to start things off for the Hawkeyes. Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan followed suit taking down Payne and Wong of Western Michigan, 8-2, to secure the doubles point. Garret Dunn and Michael Swank fell in their doubles match.
“That was our best win of the year against a good Western Michigan team,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “We continue to improve week by week and there are some really big challenges coming along these next few matches.”
The Hawkeyes won 3-of-6 singles matches to post the one point victory. Dunn took down Greiner of Western Michigan in two quick sets for Iowa’s first singles victory. Next, Estenssoro continued his strong play as he defeated Wong, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 for Iowa’s second singles victory. With all the other matches decided and the score knotted up at three a piece, Dierckx came through in the clutch and pulled out a triumph in three sets against VanderPloeg 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to give Iowa the win.
“Today went right down to the final match and Dierckx really came through when it mattered,” added Houghton.
The Hawkeyes return to action Wednesday as they host Drake University at 6 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
