Iowa falls to Minnesota on the Road, 428.750-416.300

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The No. 8 University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team fell at No. 7 Minnesota (428.750-416.300) on Saturday night inside the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis. Four Hawkeyes earned individual event titles as the Gophers ended Iowa’s three-meet winning streak.

Matt Loochtan led Iowa on floor exercise, earning third place with a score of 14.650. Javier Balboa finished fifth (14.300), followed by Jack Boyle in sixth (14.000). Minnesota’s Josh Wokurka and Sean Bauer scored a 14.800 to tie for first place.

Anton Gryshayev scored a 13.850 on the pommel horse to finish fifth. Ellis Mannon of Minnesota took the event title with a score of 15.050.

Balboa paced Iowa on the still rings, placing first with a score of 14.850. Gryshayev scored a 14.600 to earn third place. William Albert finished closely behind in fourth with a 14.400. The Hawkeyes edged the Gophers, 71.600-70.900, on rings.

Albert earned the second event title of the night for the Black and Gold on vault with a 15.050. Balboa finished with a 14.700 to earn fifth. Minnesota led Iowa on vault 73.050-72.350.

The Gophers’ Steve Jacuik took the parallel bars title with a 15.100. Cyrus Dobre-Mofid finished in fifth (14.300), followed by Boyle in sixth (13.950), and Loochtan in seventh (13.950.)

Mitchell Landau scored a 15.000 to secure a first place finish on the parallel bar. Minnesota topped Iowa 68.950-67.500 on the event.

Balboa captured his fourth-straight all-around title, finishing the meet with an 84.450. The event marked the first time that a five-up, five-count format was utilized this season.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Lincoln, Neb. on March 16 to take on No. 10 Nebraska for the second time this season. The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
