Hawkeyes to Compete at Zone D Diving Championships

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s divers Joelle Christy, Abby Grilli, and Lauren Kelba, and men’s diver Addison Boschult will compete at the 2013 Zone D Diving Championships in Houston at the UH Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium on March 11-13.

EVENT INFORMATION
Admission to the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships is free to all spectators.

FAN PARKING
Monday through Thursday spectators may park in the East Garage or Welcome Center Garage. On Friday and Saturday only, spectator parking will be available in parking lots 20A and 20C. On Friday only, spectators using Lots 20A and 20C on Friday will need to drive to the Visitor Information Booth on University Drive to purchase a visitors permit.

MEET THE HAWKEYES DIVERS
Redshirt sophomore Joelle Christy leads the team in the one-meter with a score of 313.35. The point total marks her collegiate best, which she earned in the competition against Illinois on Jan. 19. She leads the Hawkeyes in the platform with a 234.75 point total she accumulated against Northwestern on Jan. 26. Christy earned a collegiate best score in the three-meter during the meet against Iowa State with a point total of 327.08.

Junior Abby Grilli leads the team in the three-meter. She collected a point total of 354.10 during the 2013 Big Ten Championships. The Burr Ridge, Ill., native posted a collegiate best score of 289.35 in the meet against Illinois on Jan. 19, and a collegiate best score of 289.35 in the platform during the Hawkeye Invitational on Dec. 2, (205.35).

Junior Lauren Kelba posted a collegiate best score of 327.60 in the three-meter during the 2013 Big Ten Championships. Kelba collected a collegiate best score of 295.95 in the one-meter at Illinois on Jan. 19. As a sophomore, Kelba accumulated a collegiate best score of 256.95 in the platform during the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Her score ranks fourth in Iowa history.

Freshman Addison Boschult posted a collegiate best score of 315.00 in the platform during the Hawkeye Invitational on Dec. 12. During the meet against Indiana and Ohio State, Boschult accumulated collegiate best scores in the one-meter and three-meter events. He collected a point total of 325.13 in the one-meter, and grabbed 341.78 points in the three-meter.

WEEKLY HONORS
Redshirt sophomore Joelle Christy was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Dec. 11 and Jan. 22. Christy earned her first Big Ten Diver of the Week honor after winning the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events against Iowa State on Dec. 7. She collected a pair of career-best point totals, finishing with 303.29 in the 1-meter and 327.08 in the 3-meter. Christy was named Big Co-Diver of the Week on Jan.22. She earned the accolade after collecting victories in the 1 and 3-meter springboard events during Iowa’a 192-106 dual victory over Illinois on Jan. 19. The Springfield, Ill., native collected a collegiate best score of 313.35 points in the 1-meter and claimed the 3-meter with a 322.20 point total.

DIVING COACH Todd Waikel
Todd Waikel began his duties as the University of Iowa diving coach in July 2012. Waikel, who was the assistant diving coach at Indiana for seven seasons, replaced long time UI diving coach Bob Rydze. Waikel comes to Iowa City with an impressive collegiate and national diving resume. He helped the Hoosiers to five Big Ten Conference titles (four women’s, one men’s) and three top 10 NCAA finishes in his seven seasons. He also has coached 10 USA Diving National Teams to titles since 2006.
