IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team has received an at-large berth into the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships. The Hawkeyes (20-12) are a No. 9 seed and will play No. 8 seed Miami (21-10, 11-7) from the Atlantic Coast Conference in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. First round action will begin Sunday at approximately 6:30 p.m. (CT). The game will be televised live on ESPN2, with Holly Rowe and Brenda VanLengen calling the action.

This marks Iowa’s 22nd trip to the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Lisa Bluder has led the Hawkeyes to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances in her 13 years at Iowa, including each of the last six years. Iowa is one of only 13 teams in the country to appear in the last six NCAA Tournaments (Baylor, Fresno State, DePaul, Tennessee, Stanford, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Duke, Georgia, Marist, Texas A&M, Connecticut, Iowa State).

The 2013 NCAA Championships will mark the 12th time the University of Iowa has served as a host. Iowa hosted its first NCAA action in 1986 when it was one of four regional final sites. Carver-Hawkeye Arena also hosted from 1987-90, 1992-94, 1996, 1998 and in 2009. The Hawkeyes hold a 9-5 record in NCAA Tournament games played at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hurricanes finished tied for fourth in the ACC this season. Iowa and Miami share four common opponents during the regular season; Penn State, Wisconsin, Florida State and North Carolina. Iowa was defeated by Penn State and picked up two wins over Wisconsin. The Hurricanes upset Penn State in Coral Gables and also picked up a win over Wisconsin.

Iowa fell to North Carolina in the Preseason WNIT championship game and dropped a road contest at Florida State. The Hurricanes lost two games against Florida State and dropped a close two-point decision at home against the Tar Heels.

Morgan Stroman and Stefanie Yderstrom were both first team All-ACC selections. Stroman leads the team with 12.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Yderstrom is next with 12 points per contest.

Iowa is 2-0 all-time against the Hurricanes, with both meetings coming during the 1985-86 season. The Hawkeyes defeated Miami, 83-63 on Nov. 29, 1985, on a neutral court in the Louisiana State Crawfish Classic. Iowa picked up a 75-46 win over Miami later that season on Feb. 10, 1986 in Iowa City.

Iowa is a No. 9 seed for the second consecutive season and the sixth time in school history.

The Iowa City first/second round site is a part of the Norfolk Regional. No. 1 seed Notre Dame will take on No. 16 seed UT Martin at 4:05 p.m. (CT) on Sunday. The two winners will meet in the second round Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. (CT).

    Head Coach Lisa Bluder Quotes

Having a week to prepare for Miami (Fla.)
A week is plenty, it really is; especially since we don’t have to travel and we have the Sunday game versus the Saturday game, it really does give us a little extra time. The coaches are going to be up tonight and watching a bit of game film, we have practice tomorrow afternoon, we’ll practice on Wednesday, and we’re actually going to take Thursday off and go Friday and Saturday again preparing for that Sunday game: Try to make it more of a typical Big Ten week.

What is known about the Hurricanes
I really haven’t seen Miami play this year. I know they were in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and I believe Michigan or Michigan State beat them, but I can’t remember for sure. I don’t know much about them, except I know their coach, she is from Wheaton, Ill., and went to the same high school my husband went to, that’s all I know.

Expecting a large crowd in Carver-Hawkeye Arena
We have so many good things going on this week with our men being in the NIT, but I’m hoping that Hawkeye fans will want to come out to a couple national tournament games here in Carver-Hawkeye Arena this week. I hope we get a good crowd. Last time we did host, out of the 16 sites, we were the fourth-highest attended site in America and I would love for us to do something like that again.

Comments on 6 straight years in the NCAA Tournament
It says the tradition of this program, the stability of this program. I have to check my numbers, but I think there are only 13 other programs in the United States of America that have done that and we are the only Big Ten university that has done that over the last six years. For us, it shows that our program has gotten to a great level — constant success and stability, and that means a lot.

What it means for the seniors to go 4-for-4 in NCAA Tournament berths
For the last three years we will be able to have our seniors say that: they have played in every single national tournament to end their season. It’s special to be able to say that. For them to be able to go into their career and say they did that every single year; there are so few people that get to have that opportunity and can actually say that, so it means a lot that they can go out there and now be a part of that elite group.

    Senior Jaime Printy Quotes

On going 4-for-4 in NCAA appearances during her Iowa career
I’m so blessed to be a Hawkeye and for us to keep this (NCAA) run going — the tradition of everyone else who has done it, it’s an amazing feeling. I’m really proud of my team.

    Waiting to be selected
I was nervous. I was probably more nervous than any other year because there is always that chance that you don’t make it. It does help that we’re hosting and I was excited to find out who we would play and being here in front of our crowd and our fans, it’s going to be fun.

On what she knows about Miami (Fla.)
I have no idea. Coach Bluder said she doesn’t either. They are going to go work on them tonight and we’ll get started tomorrow at practice.
