THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa men’s tennis team (7-12, 0-7) continues its spring season hosting a pair of Big Ten foes. First, the Hawkeyes will take on No. 48 Michigan State (9-11, 3-4) Friday at 2 p.m. Next, Iowa will compete against No. 24 Michigan Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will take place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
Juan Estenssoro PICKS UP SINGLES VICTORY
Junior Juan Estenssoro picked up the lone singles victory for the Hawkeyes in a 6-1 loss to Nebraska. Playing in the No. 3 singles slot, Estenssoro took down Marc Herrmann of Nebraska in a tie breaker. After falling in the first set 6-4, Estenssoro battled back to win the second set, 6-4. The match then went to a tie breaker which Estenssoro won, 1-0. Estenssoro currently holds a 7-12 recrod in singles play and is 1-2 when playing in the No. 3 singles slot.
Matt Hagan IMPROVES SINGLES RECORD
Sophomore Matt Hagan picked up another singles victory in the Hawkeyes’ previous match at Purdue. Playing in the No. 3 singles slot, Hagan took down Pawel Poziomski of Purdue in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-3, Hagan came back to win the second set 7-5. The match went to a tie breaker which Hagan won, 1-0. Hagan currently has a 7-12 record in singles action and has competed in the No. 1 singles slot more than any other Hawkeye with 11 appearances. Hagan holds a 5-6 record in the No. 1 singles slot.
HEAD COACH Steve Houghton
Steve Houghton, the dean of Big Ten tennis coaches, is in his 32nd year as head coach of the Hawkeyes. He has compiled a career record of 339-375 (.475), recording the most wins of any coach in Iowa men’s tennis history.
