AMES, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team finished its spring exhibition season with an unbeaten record after competing Saturday at the Big 10/Big 12 Challenge hosted by Iowa State. The Hawkeyes earned a draw against Kansas and defeated the Cyclones to finish the season with an unblemished 5-0-2 record.
“It was a good day where we were able to play a lot of combinations and keep players healthy,” said head coach Ron Rainey. “We had moments of good play from everyone on the field and it was a great way to end the competition portion of the spring.”
Iowa battled to a 2-2 draw with the Jayhawks in the opening game. Sophomore Cloe Lacasse tallied both goals for the Hawkeyes, while junior Ashley Catrell and freshman Lana Bonekemper chipped in with an assist.
Iowa blanked Iowa State, 1-0, in its final spring game of the season. Catrell scored the game-winning goal for the Hawkeyes, her seventh goal of the season.
The Hawkeyes outscored its opponents 16-4 this spring. Iowa earned victories over Drake (5-0), Missouri (3-0), IPFW (2-0), Marquette (4-2) and Iowa State (1-0) and settled for draws against Notre Dame (0-0 and Kansas (2-2). Iowa had a 2-0-1 record against teams that qualified for the NCAA Championships last fall.
