IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa track and field team captured 12 titles at the 14th annual Musco Twilight on Saturday. The meet was held at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer track. No team scores were kept.
Matt Byers rook the first title on the day for the Hawkeyes. The senior recorded a season-best toss of 234-8 (71.54m). That mark currently ranks second in the Big Ten.
“It was a season best, so it shows improvement,” said Byers. “I think the key is to keep improving and compete hard. My consistency this season is as good as it’s been in two years, so it’s a good sign and it shows I’m on the right path to do good things. The goal is to be at my best during the championship season.”
Junior Jack Eckert (180-7; 55.05m) and senior Kyle Reid (172-10; 52.68m) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the javelin. Junior Amanda Stahle and freshmen Allison Gattone finished third and fourth, respectively, in the women’s javelin. Stahle recorded a toss of 136-11 (41.74m) while Gattone turned in a mark of 129-11 (39.61m). Freshman Dakotah Goodell finished seventh in the event with a toss of 117-3 (35.74m).
The Hawkeyes swept the top three spots in the men’s 100 meters. Justin Austin captured the Musco title for the second straight year. The senior clocked a time of 10.51.
“It was good to get the win in front of the home crowd,” said Austin. “This is my last time running at home as a Hawkeyes, so it’s a little emotional, but it’s all good. Just glad I got the win.”
Larney followed close behind Austin, finishing second with a time of 10.61. Sophomore Tevin-Cee Mincy finished third when he crossed the line in 10.86. Senior Kyle Reid (11.24; 6th) and sophomore Babatunde Amosu (11.25; 7th) also competed in the event.
Larney also recorded a season best leap in the men’s long jump. Larney captured a first-place finish with a mark of 24-0 ¾ (7.33m). Freshman Klyvens Delaunay finished third (22-5; 6.83m) in the event, while freshman Kerry Dean Jr. placed fifth (21-5 ¼; 6.53m). Sophomore Sarah Ryan leapt to a first-place finish in the women’s long jump. Ryan recorded a leap of 18-6 ½ (5.65m).
Lake Kwaza captured the women’s 100 meters title. The freshman clocked a time of 11.93. Junior Raven Moore grabbed a second-place finish in the event. Moore turned in a time of 12.03.
Moore took the title in the women’s 200 meters when she crossed the line in 24.54. Freshman Taylor Lynch ran to a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 25.58.
Senior Keaton Rickels ran to a first-place finish in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Rickels clocked a season-best time of 51.60. Kyle Slaymaker finished eighth in the event. The junior crossed the line in 56.77.
Junior Adrianne Alexia and freshman Kaitlyn Nelson finished first and second, respectively in the women’s 800 meters. Alexia recorded a time of 2:12.35, while Nelson crossed the line in 2:13.38.
“I’ve been working hard in my training to get out fast,” said Alexia. “My plan was to come through the first 600 in a good time and then hold on. It was a tough race in tough elements, but I’m happy with the way it turned out.”
Freshman Caleb Wilfong took the lead on the final lap of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn a first-place finish. Wilfong crossed the line in a personal-best time of 9:14.36.
Freshman David Nsabua grabbed a first-place finish in the men’s triple jump. Nsabua recorded a personal-best jump of 48-10 (14.88m). That mark ranks tenth all-time at Iowa. Freshman Kerry Dean Jr. also recorded a personal-best mark (46-10; 14.27m) to finish fourth.
Tayo Oladele-Ajose earned a first-place finish in the women’s high jump. The freshman cleared a personal-best height of 5-6 ½ (1.69m). Kevin Spejcher recorded a personal-best mark in the men’s high jump. The freshman’s mark of 6-9 (2.06m) was good enough for a fourth-place finish. Senior Brandon Oest also competed in the event. Oest finished sixth with a mark of 6-7 (2.01m).
Junior Jasmine Simpson took the women’s hammer throw invite title. Simpson recorded a toss of 191-01 (58.25m). Sophomore Annemie Smith recorded a personal-best mark of 187-10 (57.25m) to finish second. That mark ranks third all-time at Iowa. Ashlyn Gulvas’ toss of 178-1 (54.27m) was good enough for a sixth-place finish, while senior Majesty Tutson finished eighth with personal-best mark of 161-5 (49.20m). Her mark ranks tenth all-time at Iowa. Senior Ben Stancombe recorded a toss of 193-5 (58.95m) to finish fourth in the men’s hammer throw, while sophomore Gabe Hull recorded a personal-best mark of 177-10 (54.20m) to capture a seventh-place finish in the event.
Hull took the men’s shot put title. The sophomore recorded a personal-best toss of 56-9 ¼ (17.30m). Junior Andrew Carman grabbed a fifth-place finish when he recorded a mark of 51-2 ¼ (15.60m).
Hull also grabbed a second-place finish in the men’s discus. The sophomore recorded a toss of 194-0 (59.13m). Junior Jack Eckert also competed in the event. Eckert finished seventh with a mark of 103-7 (31.57m). Sophomore Sam Joens recorded a personal-best mark in the men’s discus open competition. His mark of 158-4 (48.25m) secured a second-place finish. Carman finished fifth in the open event with a mark of 148-7 (45.28m). Tutson earned a second-place finish in the women’s discus. The senior recorded a mark of 166-7 (50.77m).
Brittany Holst recorded a personal-best mark in the pole vault. The sophomore cleared a height of 11-1 (3.38m) to finish fifth. That marks ranks sixth all-time at Iowa.
Junior Kyle Slaymaker clocked a personal-best time of 49.06 in the men’s 400 meters. His time was good enough for a seventh-place finish. Sophomore Kaleb VanCleave ran to a tenth-place finish in the event with a time of 50.06.
Ryan Weir ran to a second-place finish in the men’s 800 meters when he crossed the line in 1:51.96. Freshman Will Teubel clocked a personal-best time of 1:53.13 to finish second, while freshman Neil Flattery finished ninth with a time of 1:54.51.
Freshman Lisa Gordon and graduate student Mareike Schrulle finished third and fourth, respectively, in the women’s 3,000 meters. Gordon clocked a time of 3:42.19, while Schrulle recorded a personal-best time of 9:42.91.
The Hawkeyes will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Relays on April 25-27.
