Cilek Qualifies for Public Links Championship

June 6, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa assistant women’s golf coach and former Hawkeye student-athlete Laura Cilek qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship earlier this week, firing a 71 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny, Iowa, to advance.

Incoming Hawkeye Jessie Sindlinger finished two strokes back of Cilek, posting a 73. She will serve as an alternate.

“It is important for younger coaches like myself to keep playing competitive golf,” said Cilek. “The more you can put yourself in the same situations as your players, the better you are going to be able to coach them through those moments.

“I had been looking forward to the tournament for a couple weeks, and it was fun competing on the golf course with our incoming freshman Jessie Sindlinger in the group in front of me. I saw her sink quite a few putts, so I knew I had to put up a good number to advance.”

Cilek completed her second season as an assistant coach at Iowa in 2013. As a student-athlete, the Iowa City, Iowa, native served as the team captain for three seasons, and was a member of Iowa’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2009 and 2010. Cilek, who played 109 rounds in her Hawkeye career, posted a career-best 78.6 scoring average over 30 rounds during her senior season.

The 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship will take place June 17-22 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
