June 19, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder announced today that guard Kathy Thomas (5-foot-6) has asked for and has been granted her release from her scholarship to transfer to another school.

“We appreciate Kathy’s effort and contributions this past season,” said Bluder. “Kathy indicated she wants to be closer to home, and we have granted her request. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

The Flint, Mich., native averaged six minutes, 1.6 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 32 games off the bench as a sophomore last season.

“I would like to thank the coaches for giving me this opportunity,” said Thomas. “They are tremendous people. I would also like to thank my teammates. I have never been around such an intelligent group of young ladies who work hard every day.

“This is a hard decision for me. As a player who loves the game of basketball, I have to make the right decision for me and my future. I will never forget the opportunities Iowa has given me.”

Iowa will return nine letterwinners from a team that went 21-13 and made its Big Ten-best sixth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, while also adding freshmen Ally Disterhoft (Iowa City, Iowa) and Alexa Kastanek (Lincoln, Neb.).
