IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa women’s golf student-athlete Chelsea Harris will compete at the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship this week in Southampton, N.Y., at the Sebonack Golf Club.
Harris, the first Hawkeye to compete in the event, will open play in the 68th annual U.S. Women’s Open in the first group on Thursday at 5:45 a.m. (CT), joining Ayako Uehara and Jamie Hullett. The group will tee off at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on Friday on hole No. 10.
The field of 156 players will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties before the weekend.
To earn a spot, Harris advanced through the Wheaton, Ill., qualifier, in a one-hole playoff on May 14. She finished with a 36-hole total of 145 (+1) at Cantigny Golf Club to finish tied for second place, where she went on to defeat Mexico’s Ana Menendez in a first-hole playoff.
Harris was a member of the UI women’s golf team from 2008-12. The Normal, Ill., native competed in 40 career tournaments. As a senior in 2012, she played in 11 events, posting a team-best 76.28 scoring average, tying Liz Bennet for the ninth-best scoring average in school history.
First and second round action will be broadcast on ESPN2 (2-6 p.m. CT), and third and final round action can be seen on NBC (2-5 p.m. CT).
