Todd Selders Named Assistant Women's Golf Coach

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Todd Selders, who has more than 20 years of experience as a college and prep golf coach, has been named assistant women’s golf coach at the University of Iowa. The announcement was made Friday by Hawkeye head coach Megan Menzel.

Selders joins the Iowa staff after serving as assistant women’s golf coach at North Carolina State for the past two years. North Carolina State placed second in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in 2013 and advanced to NCAA regional competition.

North Carolina State won three invitational tournament titles in 2012 while also qualifying for the NCAA regional tournament. The Wolfpack advanced through regionals to the NCAA Championships, placing 13th in the nation.

“I am very excited to have Todd join our staff,” said Menzel, in making the announcement. “Todd brings excellent experience to our staff and has proven through the years to be an outstanding recruiter. I know Todd will help us continue make the climb in the Big Ten and nationally. Todd is very respected by his peers across the country and has proven at every stop along the way to be effective. I know he will be a great fit for us here at Iowa.”

On the collegiate level, Selders was the associate head coach for the men’s golf program at Coastal Carolina in 2011 after serving as the head women’s golf coach at Southern Methodist University for 11 seasons (2000-10). He served as assistant men’s golf coach at Oklahoma from 1997-2000. His SMU teams advanced to NCAA regional play in four seasons. His team placed second in the 2006 Conference USA championships. Selders was Coach of the Year that season and also the WAC Coach of the Year in 2004.

Prior to joining the college coaching ranks, Selders taught and coached in the Mansfield Independent School District in Mansfield, Texas. He was the District Coach of the Year on three occasions (1993-95) and served as vice-president of the Texas Golf Coaches Association from 1996-98. Selders was an assistant professional and junior program coordinator at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield (1989-94). He has assisted with summer junior golf camps at the Hank Haney Golf Ranch in McKinney, Texas since 2000.

Selders, a native of Edmond, Okla., earned his bachelor’s degree from Central State University in Edmond, Okla., where he was a four-year member of the golf team and a member of the Dean’s Honor Roll, and later earned his master’s degree from SMU.

Laura Cilek, a former member of the Iowa women’s golf team, has served as the UI’s assistant coach in a temporary position for the last two seasons.

“I want to thank Laura for her outstanding service to the Iowa Golf program the past two seasons,” said Menzel. “Laura is a true Hawkeye and her loyalty and enthusiasm for Hawkeye athletics has helped us get the program moving in the right direction.”
