IOWA CITY, Iowa — Four goals in the first 45:17 propelled the University of Iowa soccer team to a 4-1 exhibition victory over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
“We did some nice things against Milwaukee, a team that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year,” said UI head coach Ron Rainey. “Our intensity, concentration, and work ethic was very good.”
Sophomore Brooke Backes jump-started the Hawkeye scoring in the third minute on a goal from 10-yards out. Backes received a pass from junior Cloe Lacasse, turned and fired a shot into the right corner of the net to put Iowa up 1-0.
Lacasse doubled the advantage with a goal in the 25th minute when she received a ball over the top from junior Melanie Pickert and got a foot on it to sneak it past Milwaukee goalkeeper Natalie Fettinger.
Pickert then assisted on her second goal of the half at the 40:33 mark. She sent the ball into the box from the midfield, where junior Anne Marie Thomas’ header beat Fettinger, making the score 3-0.
After out-shooting the Panthers 9-2 in the first half, Iowa quickly recorded its fourth goal just 17 seconds into the second stanza. Lacasse found junior transfer Emily Scott, who buried the ball into the back of the net passed freshman Paige Lincicum. Scott played her first two seasons at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The Panthers got on the board in the 53rd minute when Amy Kauffung sent the ball into the box to Kelly Lewers, who found Maria Stephans for the goal. Stephans’ bested Hawkeye goalkeeper Hannah Clark on the score.
Clark picked up the win, allowing one goal in 52:11 minutes and making a pair of saves. Junior Kiley Beck played the final 37:49, finishing with three saves.
Iowa controlled the game, out-shooting the Panthers, 14-10, but six of the Milwaukee shots came in the final six minutes.
“It’s great to get back on the field with a fresh squad,” Lacasse said. “Everyone was excited to get some time on the field. It was the first time for some freshmen and Emily. It was great intensity.”
The Hawkeyes will open the regular season Friday night at Drake. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
“We have to get cleaner technically, and do it in the area of the field where things happen,” Rainey said. “If we can do those things, we can be ready for our opener versus Drake.”
