Sept. 28, 2013

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Iowa swimming and diving team swam to a World Record in the 200 short course meters mixed-medley relay at the Michigan Water Carnival on Saturday at UM’s Canham Natatorium.

In the second-to-last event of the day, the Hawkeyes swam to a World Record time when seniors Dustin Rhoads and Andrew Marciniak, junior Haley Gordon and sophomore Olivia Kabacinski finished with a time of 1:47.61.

The previous World Record was set this week in Bloomington, Ind., by the Indiana men’s and women’s teams at the Indiana Relay Rally. All World Records are unofficial until ratified by FINA.

Iowa also bested a previous World Record time in the mixed 200-meter freestyle relay when sophomore Jackson Allen, senior Gianni Sesto, freshman Emma Sougstad and sophomore Allie Orvis posted a time of 1:40.26. Michigan took down the old record, finishing in 1:36.78.

“This was a fun, competitive, and wild day of swimming,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “It’s extremely early in the season, but we raced hard over the weekend. It’s now back to Iowa City to continue our preparation for more duals and the championship season.

“We want to thank Michigan for being a great host. They haven’t skipped a beat from last season’s NCAA Championship run.”

The Hawkeyes also came away with victories in the 50-yard backstroke with a start from the blocks, 50-yard butterfly with flip turn and in the 400-yard toss-up and 500-freestyle relays.
