IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa’s Jessy Silfer has been named Big Ten Freshman of the week, the conference announced Tuesday. Iowa has won five Player of the Week awards this season.
“Jessy is a really physically talented player and her competitiveness allows her to hone in on her role,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum.
The defender helped anchor an Iowa defense that allowed only two goals in the Hawkeyes’ two victories this past weekend. Silfer and the Hawkeyes first took down Ohio State (Oct. 18), 3-1, surrendering only eight shots. Next, Iowa defeated Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, 3-1, and only allowed seven shots.
“Jessy made some really important plays over the weekend, intercepting passes and keeping the play ahead of her organized,” said Griesbaum.
Silfer and the Hawkeyes will look to extend their five-game winning streak on Friday as they host No. 6 Penn State at 2 p.m. (CT) at Grant Field. The game can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
