IOWA CITY, Iowa – Led by junior Cloe Lacasse’s fifth and sixth goals of the season, the University of Iowa soccer team defeated Purdue by a score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
Lacasse’s first goal came in the 10th minute, after senior Alex Melin fed Lacasse the ball in the box, and the Sudbury, Ontario, native fired the ball into the top left corner of the net. Her second goal, coming in the 58th minute, gave her a team-high six goals on the season.
“It was great to get a win today, especially since it was our seniors’ last game on our home field,” Lacasse said. “We came in with urgency, and we know we wanted to score fast to take them out of their element right away.”
A stingy Iowa defense allowed only six shots on goal on Saturday, notching their first shutout since their victory over Northwestern on Sept. 29. Purdue attempted only two shots in the first half.
“Purdue is a really good attacking team, and to get a shutout today was awesome,” head coach Ron Rainey said. “We’re happy to get the win, and we’re ready for our next challenge.”
The win clinches a berth in the Big Ten Tournament for the Hawkeyes for the third straight year and ties the program record for most wins in a season.
“We’ll watch film and look at what we have to improve upon,” Rainey said. “We should really lock in to who our next opponent is, and put together a good gameplan so we can put our best foot forward in the Big Ten Tournament.”
Iowa finishes its regular season with an overall record of 13-5-1, and a 5-5-1 record in conference play. The Hawkeyes next match will take place in Champaign, Ill., on Nov. 6 in Big Ten Tournament play at a time to be determined.
