1-on-1: Ally Disterhoft

Nov. 8, 2013

In our countdown to the start of the 2013-14 hoops season, we will feature all 11 Hawkeyes. Today, we feature freshman Ally Disterhoft.

Disterhoft is an Iowa City native. The former West High School standout wears No. 2 for the Hawkeyes. Disterhoft (6-foot-0) was one of 40 high school seniors selected to the 2013 PARADE All-America Girls Basketball Team.

Iowa opens the regular season tonight, hosting UC Riverside inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the Hawkeye Challenge at 6 p.m.

What is it like working with the coaching staff?
“It’s been a great time so far. They are all so knowledgeable and I have really enjoyed learning from them and learning about the program. They are great coaches and we have a great atmosphere.”

Key factor in recruitment:
“The coaches genuinely care about you. Not just as basketball players, but as women. I know that we can go in and talk to them. And the team is great. We have a great team chemistry, so that all helped.”

Facet of game you are working on:
“I think my physicality. We have worked a lot in the weight room to get stronger.”

Team goals:
“We are trying to take it week by week. We have set some practice goals, working on specifics. But we want to win a certain number of games, make it back to the (NCAA) tournament. Mostly, working hard day in and day out.”

Story behind your jersey number:
“Growing up in Iowa City, I went to a lot of the basketball games, men’s and women’s. I had the biggest crush on (former Iowa men’s basketball player) Jeff Horner, and he wore No. 2, and it has stuck from then on.”

Pre-game ritual/superstitions:
“I have to put on my right shoe first. I also have this weird OCD thing where if I tap something with my right hand, I have to tap it with my left to balance it out. It’s really weird.”

Summer free time:
“We like to watch Bridesmaids. We love to quote it. We like to hang out, enjoy our time, and go to the (Coralville) Res in the summers.”
