HARRISON, Ark. – University of Iowa senior kicker Mike Meyer has been nominated for the 2013 Burlsworth Trophy. The Springdale (Ark.) Rotary Club and the Burlsworth Trophy announced the 53 nominees Tuesday, Nov. 12. The winner will be announced Dec. 9.
The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the outstanding college football player who began his career as a walk-on. The trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, who walked on to the Arkansas Razorbacks in 1994 and worked his way to becoming a three-year starter and All-American in 1998. Burlsworth was selected with the 63rd pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL Draft, but passed away after a car accident 11 days later.
Meyer, a senior from Dubuque, Iowa, walked on to the Hawkeye football program in 2010, and has been Iowa’s primary kicker for the past four seasons. He has made 14-of-17 field goals this season, and is 31-of-31 on point-after attempts, holding the school-record with 112 consecutive PATs. He is currently second in career points (308) and field goals (59), trailing Nate Kaeding in both categories (373, 67).
Prior to the start of the 2013 campaign, Meyer was named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List for a third consecutive season. He was also named to the CFPA Placekicker Trophy Watch List, and earned preseason second team All-Big Ten kicker honors from Athlon Sports and College Sports Madness.
Iowa (6-4 overall, 3-3 Big Ten Conference) is idle this week. The Hawkeyes host Michigan in their final home game Saturday, Nov. 23, and close the regular season at Nebraska on Friday, Nov. 29. Iowa is bowl eligible for a 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
Tickets remain for the home finale against the Wolverines. They can be purchased at hawkeyesports.com, by calling 1-800-IA-HAWKS, or in person at the UI athletics ticket office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
