IOWA CITY, Iowa — It wasn’t a matter of if the University of Iowa men’s basketball team would hit the century mark, but when.
Seven Hawkeyes reached double figures and all 14 players in uniform scored, leading the Hawkeyes to 109-63 blasting of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday night on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
A pair of Peter Jok free throws with 3:55 remaining gave the Hawkeyes 100 and 101 points. The 109 points are the second-most in the Fran McCaffery era and the most for the program since the 2010 season when Iowa scored 111 in a rout of SIU Edwardsville.
The Hawkeyes finished the contest with season-bests in points (109), field goals (35), 3-point field goals (seven), field goal percentage (51.5 percent), 3-point field goal percentage (41.2 percent), assists (24), rebounds (57) and steals (8). The 56 first-half points are the most scored in a half under McCaffery.
Junior Aaron White paced the team, finishing with 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists. Senior Melsahn Basabe scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior Zach McCabe and sophomore Jarrod Uthoff finished with 11 apiece. Uthoff also grabbed 11 rebounds to notch the first double-double of his career.

“Aaron has been working on his game, and you can tell,” said McCaffery. “He’s moving without it, driving, getting to the free throw line and playing with great confidence. That’s what you want to see.
“Melsahn quietly has been very good. He’s in great shape and is confident with his game, jumper, rebounding, and is catching everything. You can tell he’s a senior.”
Senior Roy Devyn Marble, junior Gabriel Olaseni and freshman Peter Jok each added 10 points. Marble also had five assists and four steals, and Olaseni had three blocks and five boards.
The Hawkeyes got off to a quick start behind the play of sophomore Mike Gesell. The guard scored eight of Iowa’s first 17 points, including consecutive field goals, to push the lead to 17-7. Iowa started the game on fire, making 11-of-15 shot attempts to open a 28-9 lead with 11:35 to go in the first half.
White scored nine-straight points in the first half to turn a 39-11 lead into a 48-13 advantage. Iowa led 56-23 at the break.
The Hawkeyes poured it on in the second half, scoring 18-of-the-first-24 points to stretch their lead to 74-29 with 13:30 remaining. Iowa used its extended bench over the final seven minutes, where it got points from junior Darius Stokes (2), redshirt freshman Kyle Meyer (3) and walk-ons Kyle Denning (three), Okey Ukah (one).
“These games have an incredible value because you have to prepare the same way,” said McCaffery. “Every game plan is different, who we are playing and what are their strengths and weaknesses. You look at Maryland Eastern Shore, and you say, `Wow, we got them by 40,’ but you need all your bullets in a gun. Their best player with 33 the other night doesn’t play.”
Iowa (3-0) returns to action Sunday, hosting Abilene Christian at 3:30 p.m. (CT) in the opening round game of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
