IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former University of Iowa linebacker Andre Jackson will serve as honorary captain when the Hawkeyes hosts Michigan on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium (11:01 a.m., BTN) in the final home game of the season.
Jackson joined the Iowa program as a walk-on and made an immediate impact for the Hawkeye defense. He led the team with 171 tackles as a freshman in 1972, setting the Iowa single-season record that still stands. The four-year letterman (1972-77) ranks second with 465 career tackles, just behind Larry Station (492).
Jackson is a native of Dixmoor, Ill., who attended Thornton HS in Chicago. He was lightly recruited due to high school knee injuries, but was put on scholarship the second semester of his freshman year. Jackson was named to the Football News’ Rookie All-America team and was the first freshman in the nation to twice earn wire service Lineman of the Week honors that season.
Along with leading the team in tackles as a true freshman, Jackson also led the Hawkeyes in tackles as a senior, with 126 stops in 1975. He earned second team All-Big Ten recognition in both 1972 and 1975. He served as one of two team captains as a senior and was named the lone team Most Valuable Player following that season.
Jackson played for two seasons under Frank Lauterbur, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 88, and his final two seasons under Bob Commings.
Jackson will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for Saturday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game, and on the sidelines during the contest.
Tickets remain for Saturday’s home finale, and can be purchased online at hawkeyesports.com, by calling 1-800-IA-HAWKS, or in person at the UI athletics ticket office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
