IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s gymnastics held the annual Black and Gold Intrasquad meet at Carver-Hawkeye Arena today. The team split in two to form the Black team and the Gold team, and showcased their talents and routines.
The Black team came out on top with a score of 245.35, and the Gold team finished closely behind with a score of 234.65.
The men’s team crowned six event champions, including sophomore Matt Loochtan (floor exercise), sophomore Doug Sullivan (pommel horse), redshirt senior Matt McGrath (rings, vault), Cyrus Dobre-Mofid (parallel bars), and Mitchell Landau (high bar).
Head coach JD Reive was very pleased with his team’s overall performance.
“It was exactly what I wanted them to do,” Reive stated. “It is very early in the season for us. There is a lot of building that goes in for us to be ready for the upcoming season and post season. Right now, we did what I wanted, which was mimic exactly what we do in the gym. Mimic the same mistakes, good and bad, and having everyone in the same rhythm and body language. I saw what I was looking for, so it was a very successful intrasquad for us.”
The Hawkeyes open their 2014 competition season on January 18 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago.
