IOWA CITY, Iowa — Junior Josh Oglesby tried to will the University of Iowa men’s basketball team to the finish line, but when the final horn sounded it was No. 16/18 Wisconsin celebrating a 79-74 victory Saturday afternoon on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Oglesby scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half to help the Hawkeyes rally from a 40-31 halftime deficit and take a 64-60 lead with 4:27 to play. The Badgers, however, made all the plays down the stretch to win its fifth-straight game and take control of third place in the Big Ten Conference standings.
“They were able to get the stops they needed, and we weren’t able to, that’s what it boiled down to,” said senior Roy Devyn Marble, who posted his first career double-double with 21 points and 11 assists. “We didn’t make the plays down the stretch, and they did.”
Trailing 51-45 with 12:40 remaining, Iowa used a 9-0 run to take a 54-51 lead. Oglesby opened the spurt with a 3-pointer, senior Roy Devyn Marble followed with a layup to cut the lead to one, junior Gabriel Olaseni made a pair of free throws to give Iowa its first lead since 5-4, and Oglesby ended the run with a jumper.

Iowa led 64-60 with 4:27 remaining, but the lead vanished when Wisconsin scored three points on three consecutive possessions to take a 69-68 lead with 2:48 remaining. Josh Gasser hit a pair of 3-pointers during the stretch.
The two teams traded leads in the final two minutes with Iowa grabbing a 70-69 advantage with 2:11 to play on a Jarrod Uthoff layup, Wisconsin took a 71-70 lead on Bronson Koenig jumper with 1:21 to play before Oglesby drained a field goal with 1:01 left to put Iowa back on top 72-71.
Wisconsin used a high-low feed to take the lead for good when it went over the top to find 7-foot center Frank Kaminsky, who caught the ball in traffic and finished, giving the Badgers a 73-72 lead with 36 seconds remaining.
Iowa went to Marble following a 30-second timeout, but the ball was knocked away when he was driving to the basket. Kaminsky ended up with the ball and was fouled, and he knocked down both free throws to give the Badgers a 75-72 lead with 24 seconds left.
“We were trying to get the ball to (Aaron) White, but they played that,” said Marble. “I thought White had his guy sealed where I could get around, but he just swiped down (to knock it away).”
The Hawkeyes called up a play for senior Zach McCabe in a timeout, but McCabe’s 3-point attempt from the right wing never made it to the rim.
“There were other options in the play, but that was an option we liked,” said UI head coach Fran McCaffery of McCabe’s miss. “We thought he would be open.”
Marble’s 21 points came on 8-of-19 shooting and a 2-of-4 night from 3-point range. Oglesby came off screen-after-screen and knocked down 8-of-12 shots en route to a season-high 17 points. Sophomore Mike Gesell and Olaseni both finished with 10 points.
“I got into a rhythm in the second half,” said Oglesby. “Coach kind of jumped me in the first half for not shooting the ball late in the shot clock, and I turned it over. He said “What’s it going to be?” (In the second half) I came off screens ready to shoot, and I knocked down some shots.”
Iowa played without the services of senior Melsahn Basabe, who gave it a go for one minute in the second half, after coming down with the flu on Saturday morning.
The Hawkeyes shot 54.8 percent in the second half and 48.4 percent (31-of-64) for the game. Iowa went 4-of-14 from 3-point range and made 8-of-9 free throw attempts. The Hawkeyes had 19 assists on its 31 field goals.
Wisconsin started 14-of-19 from the floor and made 16-of-44 attempts the rest of the way to shoot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) for the game. The Badgers made 8-of-24 3-point attempts, 11-of-13 free throws, and won the rebounding battle, 36-33.
Kaminsky scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Sam Dekker posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Gasser and Koenig both finished with 12 points.
Marble scored the game’s first five points, but Wisconsin followed with the next nine to lead 9-5 with 16:11 remaining in the first half. The Badgers were shooting in another world over the first eight minutes, making 8-of-11 shots to build a 19-11 lead.
After trading field goals for a three-minute stretch, Iowa found itself trailing 28-22 and the deficit grew to 10 (34-24) following back-to-back Dekker 3-pointers. Coming out of the final media timeout, Gesell connected on a 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 34-27 before Dekker went back door and slammed home a one-handed dunk to make the score 36-27.
Marble followed with consecutive field goals to get Iowa to within 36-31, but the Badgers scored the final four points to take a 40-31 lead into the break. Wisconsin shot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) in the first half and made 5-of-11 3-point attempts.
Iowa (19-7, 8-5) will return to action Tuesday, facing Minnesota at 6 p.m. (CT) in Minneapolis.
