Hawkeyes Will Hold Open Football Practice in West Des Moines

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa football team will hold an open practice at Valley Stadium, West Des Moines, on Saturday, April 12. The Hawkeyes also held at open practice last spring at Valley Stadium.

The open practice in West Des Moines will begin at 1 p.m. at Valley Stadium. West and Southeast gates will open at 11:30 a.m. The UI Athletics Department will announce the ticketing plan for the event in West Des Moines next week.

There will not be parking available at Valley Stadium, with the exception of limited handicap parking available in the west parking lot. The Valley Church parking lot, adjacent to Valley Stadium, will have limited public parking until 4:30 p.m. Additional parking will be available on a first-come-first served basis at: Valley Southwoods Freshman High School, Jordan Creek Elementary, WDM City Hall, WDM Library and WDM Church, surrounding the stadium. Due to limited parking, fans are encouraged to car pool when possible. Access to most parking is available off of Fuller Drive and/or 39th street. There are paved walking paths on the surrounding campus that fans can take to Valley Stadium.

Concession stands within the stadium will be open. No outside food or drink will be allowed in Valley Stadium. Other prohibited items include strollers and umbrellas. Bags may also be subject to search upon entry to Valley Stadium.

“We are pleased to be able to bring our squad to West Des Moines and central Iowa for a second straight year,” said head coach Kirk Ferentz. “We felt a year ago that the event was successful and well received by our players and coaches and our fans in central and western Iowa. The assistance and cooperation we received from everyone involved from the West Des Moines Community School District and Valley High School played a major role in the success of the event. We appreciate their willingness to work with our program again in the planning and organization of this event.”

No tailgating, including open flame grills, is allowed on West Des Moines Community School District, city of West Des Moines, or Valley Church property; including before and after the practice. Alcohol is not ever allowed on the city of West Des Moines or West Des Moines Community Schools property. All WDMCS property, including Valley Stadium, is tobacco-free. There will not be a post-event autograph session.

Iowa will begin spring drills on Wednesday, March 26. The Hawkeyes will host the annual spring game in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, April 26 (2 p.m.) to conclude spring practice.

Iowa opens the 2014 season with home games against Northern Iowa (Aug. 30), Ball State (Sept. 6) and Iowa State (Sept. 13).
