MADISON, Wis. — The No. 68 Iowa men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon to the Wisconsin Badgers at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Iowa falls to 9-5 (1-1) on the season with the loss while Wisconsin improves to 9-7 (1-2).
“That was a very winnable match today but we didn’t play well in a couple of positions and didn’t win key points in other situations,” said UI head coach Steve Houghton. “It was nice to win the doubles point and get some momentum heading into singles. It just didn’t work out today.”
The Hawkeyes got off to a great start, as they swept the doubles point. The duo of Brian Alden and Michael Swank picked up an 8-7 (7-3) victory at the No. 1 doubles position while Matt Hagan and Joey White clinched the point with an 8-7 (8-6) win at No. 3. Seniors Jonas Dierckx and Juan Estenssoro competed at the No. 2 spot, however their match went unfinished.
Wisconsin came out in singles action claiming the first four matches to secure the victory for the Badgers. Hagan got the Hawkeyes on the board in singles play with a 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 7-6 (7-3) three-set victory at the No. 4 spot over Wisconsin’s Jakhongir Jalalov. Wisconsin claimed the sixth and final match to walk away with the 5-2 victory.
The Hawkeyes have the week off before hitting the road for a pair of conference battles in the state of Michigan. Iowa, who will have played six consecutive matches away from Iowa City, will travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan on Saturday, March 29 before heading to East Lansing to take on Michigan State on the following day. Both matches will begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
