Seaborne Named B1G Athlete of the Week

April 15, 2014

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s tennis player Ruth Seaborne was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week by the league office Tuesday.

The senior from London, England, picked up a pair of wins to lead Iowa to a 4-3 win over No. 42 Illinois last week. She scored a straight-set win at the top singles position after securing the doubles point with an 8-2 win at the No. 1 spot.

Seaborne finished the week with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) straight-set win over Northwestern’s 34th-ranked Veronica Corning. The victory was her fifth straight, and improved her record to 14-5 overall, 7-2 in the Big Ten. She has played every match this season at the No. 1 position.

The weekly conference honor is the second of Seaborne’s career and the second this season. She was previously recognized on March 18.

She is the first Hawkeye since Sonja Molnar in 2010 to win the award two times in the same season.

Seaborne and the Hawkeyes close the regular season at home this week with conference matches against Ohio State and Penn State. The Buckeyes visit the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Friday at 3 p.m. (CT). Iowa hosts Penn State on Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT). Seaborne, the lone senior on the roster, will be honored at the conclusion of the doubles point and prior to the start of singles.
